Enterprise incumbents — Outreach, Salesloft, Salesforce, HubSpot — reframed themselves as "AI revenue platforms." Venture-backed autonomous AI SDRs pitched agent-led replacement of the human SDR role, with public reversals as early customers churned. Signal/intent and copilot vendors took the defensible middle: intent-driven, human-approved outreach grounded in real data.
By early 2026, Gartner placed AI sales agents at the Peak of Inflated Expectations and forecast that more than 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by 2027 — even as 40% of enterprise apps are projected to ship task-specific agents by year-end 2026.
